Home Curriculum Curriculum Curriculum West Coventry Academy – Vision At West Coventry Academy our vision is to ensure all our students leave with an understanding of the world they live in beyond the limits of their personal experiences. Through the delivery of an engaging and ambitious academic curriculum underpinned by powerful knowledge and skills; students will develop an understanding of who they are now and who they can be in the future. Specifically: Subject areas identify a clear and articulated rationale for the most appropriate knowledge, skills and understanding for WCA students to acquire. Programmes of Study are developed that are ambitious for all students. Subject areas ensure a coherent and sequenced approach to the delivery of their curricula so that students build on prior knowledge and understanding, develop fluency and are challenged to apply prior knowledge to different contexts. Cross-curricular links are carefully mapped and align to Programmes of Study to ensure a coherent scheduling of topics between subject areas to deepen understanding. Assessment is granular: it identifies the specific knowledge students have learnt and can apply, it pinpoints misconceptions, and it is incremental. Strategies such as spaced practice, interleaving and retrieval practice are used to help embed knowledge in students’ long term memory. A secure knowledge of vocabulary and numeracy is developed and applied. A culture of reading promotes reading for pleasure and develops students’ literacy. The reinforcement of the importance of the 4Rs (Respectful, Responsible, Resilience and Ready to Learn) develops young adults with the essential skills and attitudes that will enable them to succeed in life. The importance of extra-curricular activities such as sports, arts, performance is recognised and participation in schemes such as Duke of Edinburgh is promoted for all. Students make outstanding progress through the removal of any potential barriers to learning. The WCA curriculum maps out the learning journey, maximising on prior learning and making connections. It builds on their prior learning in Key Stage 2 and throughout key stage 3 students acquire and develop their knowledge, skills and understanding, setting up a foundation for Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5.
