RE & Wellbeing
Our RE and Well Being curriculum provides a balanced and broadly-based program which:
- Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of students at the school and of society
- Prepares students at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
This will be delivered across the whole school with the majority of topics delivered through RE and Well being lessons. We also have additional Well Being days and assemblies throughout the year supported by activities delivered during tutor time and across others areas of the curriculum.
Our aim is to equip students with the skills and knowledge to understand health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. Throughout school we acknowledge and refer to wide range of religions and belief systems. During RE and Wellbeing lessons pupils will explore different religions and religious practices including, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, and Christianity. We encourage the consideration of secular world views, and promote the spiritual, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, preparing pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
We offer a safe and comfortable environment where students can learn, grow and develop positive, healthy behavior for life. We want to nurture a secure learning environment where students can be inquisitive and curious, develop tolerance, empathy, improve self-esteem, and show respect and consideration for others.
To prepare for life and relationship, we encourage pupils to consider how to maintain the positive relationships they have with friends and family as well as how to be safe in relationships they may have in future. Relationships & Sex education (RSE) will provide knowledge and understanding of how the human body changes during puberty and the processes of human reproduction, within the context of relationships based on love and respect. It should develop understanding and attitudes which will help students to form relationships in a responsible and healthy manner and to appreciate the value of stable family life, including the responsibilities of a healthy relationship.
There is a vast amount of information about relationships, risks to heath and sex in the media which can be confusing and even complicated! Therefore, at times, throughout your child’s education at West Coventry Academy staff and occasionally outside speakers will deliver sessions focusing on specific topics such as relationship and sex education.
If young people can start their transition into adulthood with factual information and the confidence and knowledge to understand what is happening to them, they will hopefully grow into confident and healthy adults able to make positive choices. This starts with learning the basics about growing up and we hope that these sessions at the Academy will reinforce what you are already doing at home.
From September 2020 relationship and sex education (RSE) and Health Education will be statutory for all schools across the country. In anticipation of this, we have made changes to our curriculum using the Department of Education statutory guidance to ensure we are providing the most appropriate and factual provisions for our students.
Parents could previously choose to withdraw their children from the RSE elements of PSHE (this excluded the compulsory part of the National Curriculum covered in science). However, from September 2020 parents can only opt to withdraw their child from sex education elements of PSHE (not Relationship or Health elements), up to and until three terms before the child turns 16. After that point, if the child wishes to receive sex education rather than be withdrawn, the school must make arrangements to provide the child with sex education during one of those terms.
