Is Computer Science for you?

Computing affects so many parts of our lives. Whether you wish to continue with your studies or go into the work place, you will benefit from the better understanding of Computing that you will develop by completing this course.

Employers place an enormous value on Computer Science skills, and this course will stand you in good stead for entering into employment.

Computing itself is also offered by universities, either as a subject in its own right or in a combination with other subjects. This course may also lead on to other computing based courses such as software design.

This course has a minimal entry requirement of FP3 for ICT, Computing and Business at KS3 or top 2 Maths sets.


What Will You Do?

Paper One: Computer Systems

This is an examined unit that considers:

  • Systems Architecture
  • Computer Networks and Networking
  • Moral, ethical and social issues around computing and digital content.

Paper Two: Computational thinking, algorithms and programming

This is an examined unit that considers:

  • Algorithms
  • Programming techniques
  • Producing robust programs
  • Computational logic

Paper Three: Solving a practical programming problem

This is a coursework based unit involving the development of a computer program along with the computer programming code itself based on a practical scenario.


Assessment Details:

80% External Examination

2 x exams of 1hr 30 mins with 40% for each.

20% - Coursework

This is one of the new specifications introduced in 2016, and so will be graded from 1 – 9 in line with new government guidelines.
